Breadcrumb schema
Breadcrumbs are the trail of links that shows where a page sits on your site, for example Home > Services > Roof Painting. Breadcrumb schema is the structured data that describes that trail to Google.
Why it matters
Section titled “Why it matters”Google can show the breadcrumb trail in search results instead of a long web address, which helps searchers see what the page is. Visible breadcrumbs also help visitors move around your site.
How to do it
Section titled “How to do it”| Platform | How |
|---|---|
| WordPress (Yoast SEO) | Turn on breadcrumbs in Yoast SEO > Settings > Advanced > Breadcrumbs. Yoast adds the breadcrumb schema for you. Your theme may need to display them. |
| WordPress (Rank Math) | Turn on breadcrumbs in Rank Math > General Settings > Breadcrumbs. |
| Shopify | Many themes include breadcrumbs. Check your theme settings, or run the test below to see if the schema is already there. |
| Wix, Squarespace | Run the test below to see what’s already output. Add custom code only if it’s missing. |
| Custom-built site | Ask your developer to add BreadcrumbList structured data matching the visible trail. |
The schema needs at least two steps in the trail, each with its position, name and page address.
Check it worked
