Internal links

Internal links are links from one page on your website to another page on the same website. Anchor text is the clickable words in the link.

Google finds pages by following links. A page with no links pointing to it is hard for Google, and visitors, to find. Good anchor text also tells Google what the linked page is about.

  • Make sure every important page has at least one link to it from another page, not just from the menu.
  • Link from related content. A blog post about roof leaks should link to your roof repair service page.
  • Link your service pages to the locations you cover, and back again.
  • Use descriptive anchor text, such as “our commercial roof coating service”, not “click here” or “read more”.
  • Don’t cram in links. Add them where they genuinely help the reader.

In any website editor, highlight the words you want to link, select the link button and choose or paste the page’s address. Use the full address of the page on your own site.

Click each new link to make sure it goes to the right page. Search Console’s Links report, in the left menu, shows which of your pages have the most internal links.
